Authors of The Pureganic Companion, Keiryn & Erika Satynda, have a farm on the Big Island of Hawaii, which happens to be on the rim of an active volcanic crater, which happens to be a few miles downslope from the active June 27th lava flow threatening the town of Pahoa. They have decided their best chance for a unique experience is to continue living on the far side of the flow, where health, agriculture, food and medicine are their most important priorities and give  a new personal meaning to being your own doctor and learning to thrive in difficult situations. Instead of leaving the farm they love and moving to a new community, the new community is moving to them. This blog will detail what comes next after the lava flows. We will be focusing on health, agriculture, and entrepreneurialism, as well as regular volcano and community updates.

    Taro: A Reliable Food Source

Taro is easy to grow. It
produces an abundant amount of food, such as the leaves, (lau), and the root, (kalo), which can be boiled, fried, pounded & fermented into poi, and much more. Taro is easy to propagate, and reproduces many keiki plants continuously. This is the perfect plant to rely on, and has been recognized this way for thousands of years. Our favorite food consists of boiled slices of kalo root, which are then fried in coconut oil, and served as chips or fries. If you like french fries, you will LOVE fried kalo.
