Scientists have prepared a map that divides the five volcanoes of the Island of Hawai`i into zones that are ranked from 1 through 9 based on the relative likelihood of coverage by lava flows." - from the USGS-HVO website. Above: A breakout moving in the Pahoa lava field. Below: The remains of a tree left this mold in the lava. It seems hard work and smart negotiations have paid off for Lower Puna residents, and the Big Island as a whole. From both directions in Volcano National Park and Kalapana, the National Park and County crews met in the middle, completing the rough grade re-creation of Chain of Craters Road. Originally open in the mid sixties, this new route through the National Park, Kalapana, and the beauty of the Red Road and Lower Puna has the potential of becoming a new highlight of the Big Island. Residents of the Big Island have to make sure that this road is accessible to everyone at all times, and not just Lower Puna residents, as this would obviously add an extra burden to this area. The free flow of tourism and commerce is essential to the uniqueness of Puna, and without it, the Big Island would not be the same. A question for the National Park: could fire ants and coqui frogs not have made it through your front gate prior to this emergency? Really? It seems a thumbs up to Mayor Kenoi and the County are in order. Since November 14, when a large breakout of lava occurred 1.8 miles downslope from Pu'u O'o vent at Pu'u Kahauale'a, activity has reached a near standstill near Kaohe homesteads, Apa'a Street, the cemetery, and Pahoa Village Road in Pahoa. Scientists monitoring the lava speculate that the decrease in activity in Pahoa is due to a disruption in the supply of lava from within the lava tube and crack system upslope. 5 miles upslope from Apa'a Street is the nearest surface activity presently. The lava tube system may be refilling at present, and activity in Pahoa resuming after time passes. Photo credit: USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory - Pahoa Transfer Station seen at left.

AuthorsAuthors of The Pureganic Companion, Keiryn & Erika Satynda, have a farm on the Big Island of Hawaii, which happens to be on the rim of an active volcanic crater, which happens to be a few miles downslope from the active June 27th lava flow threatening the town of Pahoa. They have decided their best chance for a unique experience is to continue living on the far side of the flow, where health, agriculture, food and medicine are their most important priorities and give a new personal meaning to being your own doctor and learning to thrive in difficult situations. Instead of leaving the farm they love and moving to a new community, the new community is moving to them. This blog will detail what comes next after the lava flows. We will be focusing on health, agriculture, and entrepreneurialism, as well as regular volcano and community updates. Archives
